Content Item - Camp Getaway Kitchen Renovations complete

We have seen 4 District Governors come and 3 go, so it has been a long haul. Monies raised were about $202,000 and expenditure was about $204,000.  The Corporate sector have been most generous. A full list of donors will be drawn up shortly.

This kitchen was built by about 14 regular volunteers, with only a small amount of paid labour. Most of the volunteers had very little building experience to start with. It is a credit to all that a first class building was constructed, one which we can be justly proud of. Site safety was always paramount and the volunteers were very aware of the requirements, and over the 3.5 years there were only very few scratches and grazes. There was no requirement for any hospital or ambulance attention.

Content Item - Axedale Hosts a UN Debate

By Joseph Hinchliffe, Bendigo Advertiser, May 28, 2016

“Mr Secretary General,” the delegation from Mali began her speech on the weekend: “Turkey made a, frankly, hilarious report on North Korea to which Mali is strongly opposed.” The delegate went onto explain how collapse of the regime would destabilise the region.

The speech did not occur in New York, but in Axedale and the delegate was 17-year-old Alice Lamont from Footscray. Ms Lamont was one of 36 students from across Rotary’s 9800 District to descend on Camp Getaway this weekend for the annual Model United Nations Assembly. Grouped into pairs representing their schools, the students were assigned a nation to represent and tasked with forming blocs and arguing resolutions.

Content Item - Kitchen redevelopment at Camp Getaway

Camp Getaway (Rotary D9800) is Rotary’s biggest asset in District 9800. Located at Axedale, 20 minutes from Bendigo, the camp has been an entire D9800 project since 2000, when it was handed over to District by RC Bendigo. The camp has been redeveloped with the prime aim of providing camping opportunities for people of all abilities, with a focus on children. Increasingly it is also being used for D9800 activities such as Youth Exchange camps and MUNA. Over $1m has been donated by clubs, government and charities to transform termite infested buildings into a modern camp of single unit and dormitory accommodation – some would say ‘5 Star Camping’!
