May 2017 – Governor’s Message - Youth Services

By District Governor, Neville John

May is Youth Service Month and like Sir Angus Mitchell, I believe that many of our actions should be directed towards helping our young people prepare to effectively manage the future. To help them be the best they can be, by supporting the development of skills in the areas of communication, leadership, driver awareness, resilience and self-esteem, and in furthering their career aspirations. We can nurture them by sharing how Rotary and they can make a difference for the better. That’s one of our more important responsibilities.

Rotary Peace Fellow Update

By Ellen Maynes , Myanmar | Consultant

It has been an extraordinary year since I completed the Rotary Peace Fellowship at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. I am truly grateful for the opportunities and connections that Rotary has made possible. So far I’ve spoken at international conferences in Europe and North America, launching a global campaign on women and peace, moved countries and starting a consultancy. Yet, by far the best and most powerful thing has been becoming part of the network of 1000 peace fellows working globally to build peace and challenge conflict. In January, I had the opportunity to return to Chulalongkorn University as a teacher for Class 22 and I enjoyed sharing my learnings with the new batch of peace fellows.

Youth Services - Developing Leaders for the Next Generation

By District Governor Neville John,

Rotary has a special responsibility towards youth, and a number of initiatives must be directed to the youth of today because they become the citizens of tomorrow”. – RI President - Sir Angus Mitchell

In 1948 while preparing for his year as RI President, prominent Melbourne Rotarian, Sir Angus Mitchell had the foresight to see the importance of investing in the next generation. Rotary District 9800 Youth Service Committees offer clubs a wide range of opportunities to nominate students to participate in various programs. Leadership is a pivotal aspect of Rotary and we offer a number of very effective programs to help young people develop their leadership skills, show them how to serve their communities, build friendships, and increase their world understanding. It’s worth iterating the programs offered and their purpose:

For more than 100 years, Rotarians have joined together from all continents, cultures, and industries to take action in our communities and around the world. The area of focus for the month of April is Maternal and Child Health.

Tank is gone – no ‘furphy’

by JOHN LEWIS, Shepparton News AUGUST 11, 2016

Shepparton blacksmith John Furphy might not be so amused to know that the humble water cart he designed in the 1880s is now so valuable it has become a target for thieves.

Mr Furphy was, by all accounts, a God-fearing man of strong morals.

It was his idea to place the rhyme Good, better, best — never let it rest — till your good is better — and your better best on the plate at the end of the tank.
