By Max Fraser, President, Rotary Club of Melton Valley

Past President Brian Dobson, Harness Racing Victoria and the Rotary Club of Melton Valley organized our first charity race night at Tabcorp Park on February 3rd 2011 and proceeds of $34,080 was donated to the Queensland Flood Appeal.

During the last 7 years we have donated approximately $125,000 to various community organizations. What a superb amount of money!!

  • Harness Racing Victoria, through Tabcorp Park, and our two Rotary clubs each decide the charities or organisations they wish to give to in that particular year.
  • This year Harness Racing Victoria nominated Tabcorp Park - Cancer Relay for Life.
  • The Rotary Club of Melton Valley suggested Gap on Graham and
  • The Rotary Club of Melton identified Christian Churches Caring, or Foodbank as it’s known.

Profit from this year’s charity race night was $17031 and both Rotary Clubs contributed $484.50 each, to make the total profit $18000. Each charity received $6000.

Pauline Dempsey, President of Melton Valley presented a cheque to Val Turner from Gap on Graham. Bianca Walker represented Tabcorp Park and presented her cheque to Mary Carroll from Relay for Life. Melton President, Max Fraser presented a cheque to Denise Morris from Foodbank.

We particularly thank Bianca Walker, Steve Hobbs, Paul Butler and Pauline and Graham Dempsey for their work on the organizing committee and all those other people who assisted at the working bee and on the actual night.

Thanks also to John Zilm, one of our members, for donating a huge amount of goods to the silent auction, and to our sponsors and other contributors.

Special mention is made of Brian Dobson. He suffered poor health for some time and always made the effort to attend our committee meetings. Unfortunately, he died as a result of cancer before the actual Race night. May he rest in peace.
